Camping at Fossil Creek

Last weekend, one of the last of the summer we went camping at Fossil Creek, north of Strawberry, Arizona. The weather was in the mid 80’s and sky clear. We camped about quarter mile down the trail. After camping overnight we meet some friends for a hike to the spring that forms Fossil Creek, an 8 mile hike round trip, with a 2000 foot decent over 2 miles. The spring at the base was amazing – 100,000 gallons of fresh spring water a minute.

Directions to Trailhead:
From Payson go north on AZ 87 to Strawberry. Turn left on FR 708 (at the Strawberry Lodge) and go west for 5 miles to the trailhead. Accessible in a car (recommended to have a vehicle with some ground clearance).
